Muir Woods National Monument

You can walk among massive old-growth coast redwoods at this free national monument, where ancient trees cool their roots in Redwood Creek while their crowns reach toward the fog. It's been a federally protected forest since 1908, so you're basically stepping into a primeval landscape that's part refuge, part living laboratory. Just note that parking reservations are recommended, so plan ahead before you head out there.
